Background of the Study
Network monitoring is a vital aspect of cybersecurity in educational institutions, ensuring the health and security of a university's network infrastructure. In Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, the university’s network supports various academic, administrative, and research activities, which require continuous monitoring to ensure reliable performance and detect security issues. However, the current network monitoring tools used in the university may not provide an efficient and comprehensive view of the network’s performance and security status.
A network monitoring dashboard is an essential tool that offers real-time data and analytics on the network’s operational status, including traffic patterns, security incidents, bandwidth usage, and potential vulnerabilities. Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Birnin Kebbi faces challenges in monitoring its vast and complex network infrastructure. Existing monitoring tools are either insufficient, disconnected, or difficult to interpret, which makes it challenging for network administrators to ensure optimal performance and detect security threats in real-time. The lack of a centralized, user-friendly monitoring system leads to inefficiencies in network management, delayed responses to incidents, and possible downtime that disrupts university activities. The proposed network monitoring dashboard will help network administrators quickly identify potential issues, optimize network performance, and enhance overall operational efficiency, ensuring uninterrupted services for academic and administrative functions.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the design and development of a network monitoring dashboard specifically for the university’s network infrastructure. It will not extend to the implementation of the dashboard or broader IT infrastructure upgrades. The study will be limited to assessing the university's network performance and security status, excluding other operational aspects of the university’s technology environment.
